Stitch in the air of Bologna (also called Aemilia Ars)

Historical description

The name derives from the Cooperative Society of Aemilai Ars founded in Bologna in 1898 in the wake of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Stitch in the air of Bologna Virginia Bonfiglioli
The section Lace and Embroidery created by the Countess Cavazza, helped by a group of artists coordinated by the architect Rubbiani, had great success both for the perfection of the work and for the beauty of the designs, derived even from antique patterns to which were added new floral motifs typical of the epoch.

Technical description

Stitch in the air of Bologna Virginia Bonfiglioli
Needle lace, also known as "stitch in the air" because it is carried out on a temporary support made on Bristol card and of the design covered with a sheet of heavy tracing paper. On this support have to be made the support stitches which allow the thread to be guided as the lace is worked. The principal stitches used are: button hole stitch, Antwerp edging stitch and whip stitch.
