Workshop Ligurian bobbin lace
Genoese Rose Points, also called "
Punto Genova",
represent Genoese lace par excellence, in fact it is especially
for this type of lace which Genoa was very famous for in the
past.
All European nobility fought over Genoese products. Men even more
than women wore them on sleeves, at the neck, at the knee, on the
edging of shoes and jackets.
The first examples of such lace were originally worked from
designs for reticella and cutwork, which mainly came from Venice.
To this end, matt stitch (punto stuoia) was used, forming the
so-called Genoese "armelletta" which can be in the form of a
small leaf (imitating reticella) or in the form of a small
triangle (imitating cutwork). It is these small leaves which,
grouped together like a corolla, form the famous Genoese Rose
Point.
The Ligurian lace-makers were so adept at imitating 15th and 16th
century patterns with their bobbins that only a very expert eye
could see if the lace had been made with bobbins or with a
needle. Later specific designs were developed to adapt the lace
to changing fashions.
