Workshop Casalguidi embroidery
At the end of the 1800’s born in Casalguidi was an
embroidery, which was then given the name of the town, was
carried out on humble cloth and threads usually in one colour
(e.g. white on white, ecru on ecru) avoiding the use of colour
because it was much more costly. The creation of this embroidery
can surely be attributed to the capable hands of the embroiderers
of that time., who finding themselves together on the threshing
floor added the work to their staying together. Starting from
this premise gives the reason why Casalguidi work carried out on
a base of four sided stitch or drawn work, seems to symbolise a
well cultivated field on which are applied the fruits of our
Tuscan land: grapes, sticks, ears of corn, flowers of the field
and even animals, the tree of life; to symbolise the eternal
battle between good and evil. Likewise it surely embroidered the
designs and renaissance symbols of which the churches of Pistoia
are rich. One finds precious examples of this embroidery
preserved in the church sacristies, since the symbolism
pertaining to Christianity made these pieces suitable for sacred
vestments. It certainly was not an embroidery intended for the
nobility or the well-off of that time where one used threads and
material of much greater richness, fine linen, silk and coloured
threads.
