Italia Invita, International Forum of Lace and Embroidery
4th edition - "Weddings Italian-Style"
Parma Fair, Italy from May 8th to 10th
2009
Workshop Aemilia Ars
The name derives from the Cooperative Society of Aemilia Ars
founded in Bologna in 1898 in the wake of the Arts and Crafts
Movement. The section Lace and Embroidery created by the Countess
Cavazza, helped by a group of artists coordinated by the
architect Rubbiani, had great success both for the perfection of
the work and for the beauty of the designs, derived even from
antique patterns to which were added new floral motifs typical of
the epoch.
Needle lace, also known as “stitch in the
air” because it is carried out on a temporary
support made on Bristol card and of the design covered with a
sheet of heavy tracing paper. On this support have to be made the
support stitches which allow the thread to be guided as the lace
is worked. The principal stitches used are: button hole stitch,
Antwerp edging stitch and whip stitch.
