This embroidery, particularly popular in the Nuoro, Baronia and Goceano areas, embellishes the traditional Sardinian over-shirts.
Technically called Smock Stitch, the embroidery "Su Bastonette” is considered a very refined variant of that stitch and it has been defined by Franca Rosa Contu, Director of the Ethnographic Museum of Nuoro, "The Sardinian stitch on gathered cloth”.
This embroidery is worked on very tight pleats in the collar, cuffs and armholes, both in women’s and men’s shirts. The patterns are mostly of geometric or organic design and are embroidered white on white.
